I took out one of my brother's and my dad for a few hours, about 3 in total, and we landed 2 lakers and a small pike. Both lakers came off of a Berkley Flicker Shad, again, but this time it was the perch colour that won out. The only change I made this go around was that I put two medium split shot sinkers on the line to bring it down a bit deeper. I was trolling in and around 30 feet of water at about 2 MPH with about 200 feet of line out, no line-counter on that reel. The first came around 8am and the second around 9am. Not a bad day on the water and a good trophy for my brother's first ever lake trout. My dad's was also his first and although it was only about 3 or 4 lbs he was happy to get out with us!
After a slow day on Monday I managed to get out this morning with a friend of mine. We left home shortly after 5am and were at the launch in Cobden, Muskrat Lake, by 6:30am. We got all set-up and started with a troll in 15FOW with some spoons off of planer boards. We thought we had a hit but once we got the board off and the line reeled in it was just 5lbs of weeds that we had caught. We saw a couple of boats in an area off of a point a couple hundred yards off so we decided to troll over and see if there was anything going. By this time we were in and around 30FOW and we were trolling some different crankbaits. As we got into the general area of where we saw the boats they had already moved on to a new area. We were marking the odd fish here or there pretty well right on bottom, so we knew there were lakers about. I was trolling a Berkley Flicker Shad in a white pattern (a lure that I saw being used on The Next Bite with some great success for pickerel, they called the colour ‘mouse’). We were trolling between 1.8-2.0MPH, I had 240 feet of line out, which we figure had the lure down about 15 feet. A solid strike and we had a real fish, no weeds this time. Right away I was feeling the headshakes. It took a while to get the fish to the boat and what a fish she was. No weight or measurements but my PB that is for sure. After a pretty quick release we were back at it. We decided we should stay in the same general area to see what else was about. Not too long after, again with 240 feet of line out, trolling the Mouse Flicker Shad another was on. Second of the day! Not as big as the first but definitely nice to see. Yet again we set-up and trolled, using the same
set-up once again and once again it paid off. By this time the wind was blowing quite strongly and it was getting difficult to manoeuvre the boat. A solid hit and another battle was underway. We got it to within 10 feet of the boat but it got head shaking and the lure was spit. We got a good peek of her and she was not quite as big as the first but it wasn’t much smaller either. We ended the day going 2 for 3; all caught flat-lining a Berkley Flicker Shad in the colour white. By far my best day out laker fishing, even though it was only my 5thor 6th time ever going for them. Hopefully my wife will let be out again someday soon! |
